Astrid Lindgren’s World is a theatre park where visitors can experience characters from Astrid Lindgren’s books in their true settings. The park was founded in 1981 and is in Vimmerby, southern Sweden, Astrid Lindgren’s native town. According to the park’s charter, Astrid Lindgren’s World shall encourage children to read and write. Astrid Lindgren’s World receives some 450,000 visitors every year, of whom 30 per cent come from abroad. The park is open from May to September, and certain weeks in October and November. During the peak season Astrid Lindgren’s World has approximately 360 employees, around 100 of whom work on the theatrical side. The limited company Astrid Lindgrens Värld AB had a turnover of SEK 116 million in 2008. The company is owned by Saltkråkan AB (70%) and the Municipality of Vimmerby (30%).
